100 YEARS OF BETTMANN
October 15th, 2003 marked the 100th birthday of Dr. Otto Bettmann, founder of the most renowned collection of 20th century historical imagery, the Bettmann Archive. To mark this milestone, we’re holding a year-long celebration featuring innovative programs, publications, and charitable giving designed to share and strengthen Dr. Bettmann’s legacy, which Corbis continues to build upon each year.
THE MAN WHO SAW THE BIG PICTURE
Dr. Otto Bettmann virtually invented the image resource business. He emigrated to the United States from Nazi-occupied Germany in 1935, arriving with a few personal effects and two steamer trunks bursting with photographs, line drawings, engravings, and art reproductions. Recognizing the historical, emotional, and storytelling power of pictures, he spent the next five decades adding to his collection. The result: an archive that today boasts over 11 million images and covers every topic imaginable.
