Children from the Islamic Institute of Knowledge in Dearborn, Michigan, recite a Ramadan prayer after a meal. Metro Detroit and neighboring Dearborn is home to an estimated 270,000 Arab-Americans, about half of whom practice Islam. The area boasts the second largest Muslim population outside the Muslim world (second only to Paris). With the international spotlight focused on the radical elements of Islam, it's easy to be blinded to the rest of the spectrum. In Dearborn, many residents represent the best of progressive Islam, committed to holding onto their Eastern traditions and culture while reinterpreting what Islam means in their modern Western lifestyles.
