‘Slave labour’ in the 21st century. Life is hard for workers on Brazil’s sugar plantations as this man’s face after a day’s work reveals. Before the harvest, the fields of sugar cane are set alight to remove the sharp leaves. Then the harvest can begin. After a day in the fields the men, followed by their children who also work in the fields are covered in soot from heat to toe. Although slavery has officially been abolished, on a wage of $1.50 a day, it looks like little has changed for these people.
